I just finished my 2017 self portrait and had some new challenges to incorporate into the painting. The reference photo I posed for had a fairly medium shadow incorporating most of the face, arms and hand. I wanted to emphasize the back lighted quality on the face, specifically in the hair as well as the reflected light draping across most of the right side of the face. My challenge was to paint the halftones as a bridge between the medium shadow and the small patch of light on the left side of the face. These halftones and the back lit areas help emphasize the three dimensionality of the face and gives the three quarter view an overall spacious feeling as it relates to the rest of the picture plane. I would like to do another one but this time incorporate more light into the half tones which finally reach the medium shadow area.
